Come on S4 2008/9 pupils, you need to start using this blog! First person to explain why they agree or disagree with the Cosmological Argument will receive £5.00 from Mr Fyfe.
The Cosmological Argument states that God is the creator of the universe, and without god, nothing would exist. It starts with that the fact that there is a universe. Everthing needs a cause, every cause needs a cause. This cannot go back forever, therefor there must be an uncaused cause. This uncaused cause is known as God. It makes sense for God to be the uncaused cause, because he is eternal, not created, and always existed. To use the schoolboy objective is pointless, to ask if everything needs a cause, why does god not and if god canbe the uncause caused, why cant it be the universe. this is pointless because for an argument to work, the examples have to be similar and the universe and God are not. God is spiritual, and the universe is physical. Thats why i think the cosmological argument is a good argument.
Hi Rebecca, thanks for your question. Have a look at page 2 of the Hindu Study Guide, 4th paragraph. It talks here about the ‘self’ or ‘soul’, ‘divine spark’, ‘atman’ : the ‘essential being’ of a person. This is the only permanent part of you that journeys through your reincarnations.
I have really enjoyed the Euthanasia part of the course, which i think has been the best section we have covered. Its really interesting and its made me think about situations that i haven’t considered before.Out of all the sections it was definatley the most benefitial, as its a topic everyone at one point will have to face.
Philosophy and Belief is the most interesting subject, am really enjoying the course.
Thanks Hannah, I’m pleased you’ve enjoyed the course and I appreciate your feedback. The content we study means we get more out of it than just passing an exam – although passing is also important! Only Genetic Engineering to go …
can you tell me why there is no real answers to the question that we ask our ” re ” teachers?????? e.g. why are we here. the answer that was given was cause we have some big purpose. That is no answer that is just a general wondering.
please try and give a detailed and well thought out answer not just a quick thought.
Hi Karina
Well the answer to your question is necessarily complex but here goes!
If you believe we are only products of our biologigal parents, the simple answer is to live life to the full and to enjoy it as much as we can. There is no other apparent purpose especially if you do not believe in an after-life. So, the answer is no particular reason other than blind chance.
However, if there is a belief that we are here for more than that – then what can it be? Simply, whether we believe in God or not, we are here to look after the planet for future generations, to protect the species (human and animal) from extinction and to look after what we are given.
There is another position that would suggest that we are here to do all of the above but a religious code of ethics demands we live according to certain rules. The short answer here is – we are here to live lives that will get us a place in heaven and to avoid hell.
I know this is fairly short but you can respond if you wish.
Hi Connor
Summa Theoligica is where Aquinas lays out his 5 arguments that show, according to him, why God must exist. Summa Contra Gentiles deals more with how Aquinas sees the Christian Church as the inheritors of the New Covenant following the ressurection of Jesus. We will touch on this theme when we do the Suffering and Evil unit and I can bring in elements of Contra gentiles if you want us to!
Why use A Watch As An Example Of Things That Are Complex And That. Why Not Use Somthing Like A Car Cause That has Loads Of good Ways As Somthing Thats Complex.

I really like Philosophy and Belief, you get to discuss things you’d never thought about before and it’s good fun.

why is it that thomas aquinas’ book summa theologica is the only one spoke of in the text books and not his other one summa contra gentiles?
